What are common themes among Steinbeck books?

Question by ief: What are common themes among Steinbeck books?

Clarification / Good vs Evil
Gave the guy below a thumbs up. Most people would say “East of Eden” is the quintessential (and best) Steinbeck book. Yeah, it’s a monster compared to “Mice and Men” and “Winter of Our Discontent,” but compared to “Grapes of Wrath,” it’s more upbeat and harder to put down.

What are some good sci-fi books to read?

Question by Nobody: What are some good sci-fi books to read?
It annoys me how most works of fiction seem to portray science and technology as being inherently evil. Thanks to medical science injuries, diseases, and conditions that would’ve been once been a death sentence are now easy curable or treatable. Why wouldn’t you want for humanity to uncover the secrets of the universe? Why wouldn’t you want to be able to prevent as many deaths as possible? Why wouldn’t you want to travel across other solar systems and galaxies? Why wouldn’t want to able to live up to 200 years old, or just not die of old age?

I don’t mean that science and technology should lead to an Utopia, in fact I would rather it not.

I want moral ambiguity, I want the heroes to do questionable things. I want the villains to be humanized. I would like for them to face an entity or force rather than a clearly defined villain/last-boss. I don’t want the generic “goody underdog rebels vs the big evil empire” where all the evils and corruption of the world are the product of one guy, or he is the embodiment of them, and then the good guys win when they kill him. It doesn’t necessary have to have everything in my “wish list”, but I hoped that I have portrayed to you what it is that I am looking for.

I haven’t touched a YA book in years.

Also yes, I have already read Neuromancer, it is one of the most well known cyberpunk books, so I didn’t think of mentioning it.

The only book of Silberburg i have read was Nightwings. . . which almost gave me a hemorrhage, so I haven’t touched another one of his books.

I haven’t heard of the other authors you mentioned, and from what I see they’ve written a lot of books, some of them being fantasy.
so i would really appreciate it if you could recommen me some titles from those authors
I have also already read Fank and Brian Herbert’s Dune, but I didn’t think it was really that much about science and technology so much as just use them as plot device for the background. The setting is more science fantasy than anything else.

Oh, well maybe you should read some science fiction written for adults, rather than children.

William Gibson’s Neuromancer

In fact I’d say most of the cyberpunk authors will make you happy. For that matter, Phillip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison, Norman Spinrad, Robert Silverburg, etc… I’d suggest you just start avoiding any book with a teen protagonist.
