Which Star Wars book should I read first?

Question by write4life: Which Star Wars book should I read first?
I just got the books Heir to the Empire and Survivor’s Quest. I was just wondering what book you suggest I read first?
Thank-you in advance for your answers!

None… =P my opinion just mattered.

Read another fictional book if you must. Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is very fun.

  1. Some of the Star Wars books have a time line of books/stories. It is usually in the first couple of pages. It will list the books broken down by saga story lines. (EX: The Empire Series and then names the 3 books.)

  2. You should follow the timeline and go all the way back to the beginning and read the Lost Tribe of The Sith series. Then read the new Old Republic novels that are coming out and then the Darth Bane novels. That’s what I have been doing because for me it is easier to understand if I start at the beginning. (Which really there are no books that go to the beginning but the closest you can get is the Lost Tribe of the Sith series). Only do this though if you are planning to dedicate a lot of time to reading Star Wars novels because there are A LOT of them and it won’t do you much good to start at the beginning if you are only going to read a few. I am planning on trying to read them all but I don’t know if I will ever be able to accomplish that.

  3. Wouldn’t it be really nice if people would actually read the question before they try to answer it.

Between those two books you definitely MUST read “Heir To The Empire” first.

    REASONS:

“Heir To The Empire” is set 5 years after the events of ep VI.
“Survivor’s Quest” is set 18 years after the events of ep VI.

“Heir To The Empire” is book one of the Thrawn Trilogy.
“Survivor’s Quest” is book two of the Outbound Flight Project Duology. Book one of this duology is titled “Outbound Flight” and it is set 32 years BEFORE the events of ep VI.

Here’s a link to the timeline of books of the Star Wars EU from Del Rey, the official publisher of the SW EU books:

If you’re “new” to the SW EU using the timeline at either Wikipedia or Wookiepedia would be the best way to get lost in all the info there … half of which is no longer true because at least half of the books listed on it never went to print. To show how confusing those timelines can be think of it this way … I’ve read probably 97% of the SW EU books & comics that have come out since 1990 & before and consider myself to be a “Guru” of sorts in regards to the SE EU and those timelines confuse the hell out of me.

    The Thrawn Trilogy:

The titles are “Heir To The Empire”, “Dark Force Rising”, & “The Last Command”. They were brilliantly written by Hugo Award winning author Timothy Zahn … the absolute “Master” of the SW EU. These 3 books are widely considered, much to the outrage of Lucas, by fans to be the “event” that brought SW back from the grave. One critic said it perfectly, yeah … imagine that … lol …, when he said “Zahn captures the feel of SW so well that you can almost hear the soundtrack of John Williams playing in the back of your mind as you read the books.” These books were so loved by the fans that in 1995 Lucas was giving serious thought … VERY serious thought … to making these books into the fabled episodes 7 – 9. One phone call to Harrison Ford killed that idea quickly because Ford was too busy with other projects to reprise his role of Han Solo. With that “door” no longer available Lucas went to work on the SE & DVD versions of the OT movies and that ultimately led to the prequel movies being made. Even though these 3 books didn’t become ep 7 – 9 Lucas gave them the tag of “official continuation of the Star Wars story”. These books are set 5 years after the events of ep VI. Han & Leia are married & Leia is pregnant with twins. Luke continues to scour the galaxy for records of the old Jedi Order … things that he could use to rebuild the old Order into a New Jedi Order.

That being said please don’t think that I’m saying that “Survivor’s Quest” is a bad book because it’s not … it is another masterpiece by Zahn but if you were to read it before you read “Outbound Flight” you will be totally lost. One thing to remember is that the books of the SW EU build on each other in a pretty coherent timeline.
